Stuart Saves the Universe Producers on Crazy 'Big Bang Theory' Spinoff
As the iconic CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" drew to a close, Chuck Lorre, the mastermind behind the show, had a bold vision for its future. He envisioned a spinoff that would take the beloved characters in a completely different direction, one that would challenge the boundaries of conventional television.
"I had this wild idea of a portal in a comic book store leading to other dimensions, and Stuart, played by Kevin Sussman, embarking on an action-adventure-comedy-science fiction journey," Lorre revealed to Variety. But this concept, as ambitious as it was, faced an unexpected hurdle.
"No one seemed to like it," Lorre admitted, highlighting the network and studio's preference for more traditional spinoffs. It's surprising, given the immense success of "The Big Bang Theory," that such a creative endeavor could be met with resistance.
However, Lorre's determination led him to persevere. He temporarily set aside the idea, focusing on other projects like "The Kominsky Method" and "Bookie." But the passion for Stuart never faded. He brought in Bill Prady, a co-creator of "The Big Bang Theory," and Zak Penn, a sci-fi and comic book expert, to refine the concept and write the script.
"Chuck approached me during the pandemic," Penn recalled. "What intrigued me was his desire to create something unique, a spinoff with a shifting tone and genre. The sci-fi fantasy element was right up my alley, and I eagerly agreed."
Prady, a self-proclaimed fan of comedic science fiction, shared a similar enthusiasm. "My favorite episodes of 'Star Trek' were always the comedic ones," he said. "So, the idea of crafting a comedy science fiction spinoff was an exciting prospect."
Sussman, who played Stuart in the original series, was also kept in the loop. "Chuck wanted to pitch me the spinoff idea," Sussman noted, "which was odd, considering I might say no."
After years of development, Lorre, Penn, and Prady finally crafted a pitch that secured a greenlight from Warner Bros. TV and HBO Max. "I was genuinely surprised," Lorre said, "that the idea gained traction."
In the spinoff, "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe," Stuart takes center stage as he and his comic book friends navigate the multiverse after a quantum interference device malfunctions. The show explores alternate realities, featuring unique dangers and surreal transformations, such as a familiar face turning into a 60-foot witch or a magical wizard.
"Stuart" pushes the boundaries of what a spinoff can be, as Sussman explains. "It's a bold risk, but it's still true to Chuck Lorre's style and built on a beloved IP. I admire his willingness to take a leap."
The show's production design and special effects were a significant undertaking. The VFX costs were unprecedented for Lorre's previous works, but the producers managed to stay within budget. Shooting in Los Angeles, thanks to California's tax credit, allowed them to assemble a top-tier crew capable of executing the show's ambitious stunts and effects.
"Creating a visually stunning show requires more than just visual effects," Penn emphasized. "It's about production design, cinematography, and a well-allocated budget."
"Stuart" also pays homage to "The Big Bang Theory" with Easter eggs and references, as Lorre intended. "We wanted the characters to enjoy and debate this show," he said. Sussman believes the show is accessible to both fans and newcomers.
Lorre's signature vanity cards make a return, adding a personal touch to the series. "Go crazy or go home" became his mantra during production, and the show reflects his bold approach.
"Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" is a testament to Lorre's willingness to take risks and push the boundaries of television, offering a fresh and exciting spinoff that will captivate audiences.
